Castellan-Colonel Roane never asked for this command a ragtag Auxilia regiment built around a clan of despised abhumans, watched over by a commissar who trusts none of them. Whipping that unit into something that can hold a line would be hard enough without a civil war breaking out around him on his very first posting.

Why read it

• A fresh angle on the Astra Militarum: the officers and auxilia troops the Imperium looks down on, forced to prove themselves anyway
• Command-under-pressure drama alongside full-scale Guard combat
• By Russell Zimmerman, for readers who want their Guard fiction grim and grounded

If you like your Astra Militarum stories built on desperate leadership rather than easy heroics, Auxilia earns its place on the shelf next to the rest of the Guard’s best.
