An Army Painter spray primer that doubles as the metal basecoat: Gun Metal gives vehicles and grim sci-fi armies a dark, hardened-steel foundation straight from the can. Spray it on and your tanks, knights and gothic war-engines are ready for a battle-scarred, worn-metal look with barely any effort.

Why it’s good

• Primer and colour spray in one, with a matt enough finish for acrylics to go over the top
• Instant dark-metal basecoat for vehicles and heavy armour
• Perfect groundwork for chipping, rust and battle damage
• Drinks up a dark wash for deep, oily shadows

Prime, wash, and dry-brush a little bare steel back in and you’ve a convincingly worn war machine before you’ve touched a proper paint pot.
